Tan Swie Hian
Artist, poet, author and linguist, who has published translation of several volumes of Western literary works, Tan Swie Hian is indeed a man of many talents and unarguably the most celebrated multi-disciplinary artist of Singapore.
Born in 1943 in Sumatra, Indonesia, Tan Swie Hian graduated with a degree in modern languages and literature from Nanyang University in 1968. He published his first collection of modern poetry, The Giant in 1968. The book, a landmark work, is considered to be the culmination of the Chinese modernist literary movement in the history of Chinese literature in Singapore and Malaysia. To date, he has published 50 titles of poetry, fables, essays, stories, criticism and translated works. Tan is the first person to have translated works by literary giants such as Henri Michaux, Jacques Prevert, Samuel Becket, Vaslav Nijinsky and Marin Sorescu into Chinese.
Tan held his first solo art exhibition in 1973 at the National Library and since then exhibited his works in numerous solo and group shows in Singapore and around the world.
A self-taught artist, Tan works with different media and he expresses himself equally well in calligraphy, oil and acrylic painting, ink painting, printmaking, cartogravures, seal-carving, sculptures, public art, earth art and performing art. Tan never compromises on creativity and profundity and is able to merge both Eastern and Western cultures to produce a unique style.
Tan has worked with choreographers, dancers and dramatists for numerous performances and is also a stage and costume designer. His performance at the gala opening of Singapore Arts Festival 2003, Instant is a Millennium – A Musical Conversation with Tan Swie Hian, together with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, was a unique concert experience combining music, poetry, calligraphy, sculpture and multimedia.
His achievements in the visual arts and literature, have won him recognition and many awards and accolades, both at home and abroad. Tan Swie Hian was conferred Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et les Lettres by France in 1978 and won the Marin Sorescu International Poetry Prize from Romania in 1999. He is also the first and only Southeast Asian artist to be elected as a correspondent-member to the oldest and most prestigious artistic institution in the world – The Academy of Fine Arts of the Institute of France. In 2006, he was conferred Officier de l’Ordre National de la Legion d’Honneur which is the highest honour of France.
In 1998, he was selected by the United Nations together with 97 other celebrated artists from all over the world, including Hockney, Christo, Lichtenstein, Boey, Matta and Tapies, to illustrate a new edition of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to mark the 50th Anniversary of its adoption by the world body. He is the first Singaporean to be conferred the prestigious World Economic Forum Crystal Award 2003 in Davos, Switzerland for his outstanding achievements and contributions to cross-cultural understanding.
In Singapore, Tan was the recipient of the prestigious Cultural Medallion in 1987 and has been conferred the Excellence for Singapore Award in 1996. On National Day 2003, Tan was conferred the Meritorious Service Medal by the President of the Republic of Singapore. The award is the country’s highest recognition for an outstanding individual with significant achievements in the arts. In September that same year, Tan was conferred an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters by Nanyang Technological University for his multiple literary and artistic achievements. His latest accolades are the inaugural Spirit of Humanities Award from the Southern College of Malaysia and the inaugural Distinguished Patron of Heritage Award 2007 from the Singapore National Heritage Board.
Tan’s gigantic enamel mural and an immense floor calligraphy set in granite can be seen at the Chinatown Mass Rapid Transit station.
Highly esteemed and respected internationally, Tan’s admirers paid tribute to him in their own ways. In 1993, an avid collector, Tan Tien Chi, built the first private art museum in Singapore – Tan Swie Hian Museum. In 1996, at the entrance of the Museum of World Famous Chinese Artists’ Work located along the Yangtze River in China, Tan’s calligraphic preface was inscribed on a stele and erected at the museum’s entrance. In 2000, his essay and calligraphy to celebrate the birthday of the Yellow Emperor was inscribed on a boulder and erected in the Imperial Mausoleum, Shanxi, which is the most ancient tomb in China.
Since 2001, work has begun on the world’s first earth art museum – The All-Wisdom Gardens: Tan Swie Hian Earth Art Museum, which sprawls over a mountain range covering two square kilometers in Qingdao, China.
In 2006, Singapore Post proudly released a set of 11 stamps based on Tan Swie Hian’s creations to pay tribute to this talented and brilliant artist.
In 2006, Candid Creation Publishing in Singapore published the 9-volume Selected Works of Tan Swie Hian with the support of the Singapore National Arts Council. The collection consists of translated works (3 volumes), essays and criticisms (2 volumes), poetry (2 volumes), fables (1 volume) and stories and plays (1 volume). The collection represents a major milestone in Tan’s pilgrim’s progress as an author and translator because it is the most complete and up-to-date.

Eugene Wijeysingha
Eugene Wijeysingha is the author of For A Better Age. His career in education spanned a total of 35 years. Starting off as a teacher in Raffles Institution in 1959, he moved on, assuming a variety of positions within the educational establishment, finally returning to his first school as its head in 1985. Involvement in the training of school principals and attendance at international programmes on education and school leadership provided him with a broad insight into the intricacies of school management. Many of the insights gained are captured in this publication.
On retiring from the education service in 1994, he sustained his involvement in education through talks to various groups and institutions, serving as a consultant to overseas schools and as a newspaper columnist. Beginning with history textbooks for secondary schools, he continued to write after his retirement, compiling a total of eight published works, including this one.

Faith Ng
Faith is the author of happily evr after? She was born on 19 May in Singapore. Reading, writing, and singing are her passions.
She is currently a Primary Six student at Tao Nan School. Being effectively bilingual, she was selected to be in the special BiCEP (Bi-Cultural Chinese Elective Programme) in 2007, and will graduate with the pioneer batch of BiCEP students at the end of2009.
Faith is active in school and currently serves as Secretary in the Executive Committee of the Prefectorial Board. She also heads the editorial team of her school newsletter, Tao Nan Scoop.
Aside from school, she sings with the Singapore Symphony Children's Choir (SSCC) and has been selected on many occasions to represent SSCC in various concerts.
Since she was 6 years old , she has has served in the Children's Ministry of her church (Faith Community Baptist Church), , leading in the worship and chorale teams.
Faith is currently preparing for her Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE), and hopes to find time to work on her second book.
Jason Ng

Elvin has over 19 years of sales and marketing experience in the field of electronics. In the course of his work, he had travelled extensively within Asia Pacific and had conducted many courses like "Professional Selling Skills" and "Applied Product Marketing" to hundreds of working professionals. He was a part time Lecturer with Nanyang Polytechnic where he taught Advanced Diploma courses in Strategic Marketing Management.
Elvin is also a Family Life Educator with Families For Tomorrow Services. He has conducted several talks to parents on the subject of computer addiction. His passion is to foster and see the restoration of parent - child relationship and for fathers to be more involved in the family. Douglas O'Loughlin
Douglas O'Loughlin is the author of Facilitating Transformation: 12 strategies for creating extraordinary breakthroughs with groups. Benita Fong
Benita Fong is the author of Johnny Can See: A Visit to the Eye Doctor. She has been an educator for more than 12 years and she enjoys teaching tertiary students in Singapore. She holds a Bachelor‘s degree in English Language and Literature from the National University of Singapore (NUS), as well as a Masters in Communication Studies (Macquarie University, Australia) and Masters in Education (Durham University, UK).

Dr Phoon Kok Kwang
Dr Phoon Kok Kwang is the author of The Colour of My Life. He is a Professor of Civil Engineering at the National University of Singapore. He is Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Singapore (IES). Dr Phoon was bestowed the ASCE Norman Medal in 2005. It is the oldest and highest honour granted by ASCE, the largest civil engineering professional society in the world, for a technical paper that is "judged worthy of special commendation for its merit as a contribution to engineering science".

Kwa Yiqian
Kwa Yiqian is the author of One Step From Paradise: An Adventure into Northern Xinjiang. Trained in accountancy, Yi Qian joined a Big Four accounting firm as an auditor for two and a half years, including a seven-month stint in Beijing.
In late 2008 however, Yi Qian decided she no longer wanted to waste precious moments of her life on a career she lacked passion for.
It was during this time that her cousin and best friend introduced her to coaching.

Tan Hwei Ee
Tan Hwei Ee is the author of The Hwei Construct: A Little Collection in His Teens. He was born in 1991 in Singapore. He studied at Nanyang Primary School, then River Valley High School in 2004 and thereafter at Hwa Chong Institution (High School) from 2005 to 2007. He is currently 18 years of age and in his second and final year at Hwa Chong Institution (College).
A brilliant and well-rounded student, Hwei Ee was selected to be in the Innovation Programme at River Valley High School, and was in the Science and Math Research Programme at Hwa Chong. He was also in the Nanyang Research Programme 2007 organised by Nanyang Technological University; and Science Research Programme 2008 by National University of Singapore, culminating in various prestigious science symposiums and fairs. In addition to his flair for the sciences, his aptitude for humanities subjects was demonstrated by his decision to take up the humanities research modules throughout his secondary school years at Hwa Chong.

Zizi and Izmir
Zizi is the author of Fatimah and Her Magic Socks. is always imagining herself embarking on different adventures. Places she has been includes a crystal palace in a teacup (her mother had one on display in the living room that was perfect for such adventures); an Arabian kingdom in her sister's big stone ring (this one she took her cousins with her); a circus complete with trumpets and bells (when her teachers in school became really boring). Izmir, the illustrator of the book, has been a secret artist his whole life and he simply cannot stop himself from drawing. He has been a storyboard artist for independent short films and a feature film, as well as a visual artist for theatre performances. He enjoys living in the eastern side of Singapore.
Christy O'Loughlin
Christy is the author of Drax the Dragon Shows His True Colours. Christy was a vice-principal of a school for children with special needs and was championing their cause, especially in the area of integration. Besides being an educator, Christy is also an expressive therapies practitioner, yoga teacher and a visual recorder. Woon Tai Ho
Woon Tai Ho is the author of To Paint a Smile: Insights of One Artist's Approach to Happiness. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree (Honours) in Political Science from the National University of Singapore and has had professional stints in Europe and the United States.
Dr Lui Hah Wah Elena
Dr Lui Hah Wah Elena is the author of .05 Significantly Yours: A Guide to Reflection on Lifelong Learning. She is an associate professor with the Psychological Studies Academic Group, National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University. She obtained a B.Soc.Sc. (Social Work) degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1968, and in the 1980s three post-graduate degrees from Michigan State University, U.S.: M.A. (Ed), Ed'al Specialist and Ph.D. (Curr & Inst). She received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Michigan State University in 1995, and the Public Service Medal (PBM) from Singapore's President in 1998. Cheryl Liew-Chng

Since then, he has been interviewed on Channel News Asia, The Straits Times, Lianhe Zaobao, Radio 93.8 and The Business Times for his speaking expertise. In 2007, Eric was also named as one of the top 25 young entrepreneurs of Asia by Business Week (USA).
Kelvin Lim
Kelvin is the co-author of The FAQ Book on Public Speaking. He started his life on stage at a young age of 5 at the encouragement of his mother. His early involvement in numerous school skits and plays allowed him to chalk up experiences and build comfort in front of a live audience. By the time he was 16, he was giving motivation speeches to fellow students in school. In junior college, Kelvin was an active member in the Debate Team.
In 1993, Kelvin joined the National Speakers' Association in Melbourne, Australia. Two years later, he became part of Toastmasters International, where his hard work started to pay off, and his talents started to shine. In 1996, Kelvin was part of the Executive Committee that brought Braddell Heights to 5th in the world (Category D; 40 members & above), thus receiving the Presidents' Distinguished Club Award.
He was also ‘Club Speech Contest Champion' that year. In 1998, he started Braddell Heights II Club that became 2nd in the world (Category A) in its 1st year, again receiving the Presidents' Distinguished Club Award. He also snagged ‘Club Speech Contest Champion', ‘Area Humor Speech Contest Champion', ‘Area Humor Speech Contest 1st runner up' and made it as a finalist to the National Humor Speech Contest.
Kelvin brought his speaking skills and gifts to the next level in 1999 when he became the Club Mentor for Life Underwriters' Association Toastmasters Club, leading it to become the 2nd in the world (Category A) in its 1st year - obtaining yet again the Presidents' Distinguished Club Award. He was later invited to be the Division Speech Contest judge. As a committed coach and mentor, he produced Singapore's ‘Regional (South East Asia) Humor Speech Champion' that same year.
In 2000, Kelvin created and developed Executive Coach International Pte Ltd. It has since become one of the largest coaching organizations in the region, with 13 Internationally Qualified Coaches, recognized by the International Coach Federation based in the USA. In 2004, Kelvin received his Master Certified Coach (MCC) qualification, making him the first and only MCC in Singapore and S.E.A, and one of four in Asia. His crisp, direct and flexible style has earned him the respect of people from all walks of life, and his ability to deliver radical ideas has led him to become one of Singapore's most influential coaches, inspiring and touching more than 5000 people.
Sharon Ismail
 Sharon is the author of What Sallamah Didn't Know. Raised on a literary diet of Enid Blyton and Judy Blume, Sharon grew up wondering why the stories of people in our lives were not captured in books, when their stories were large enough to fill many magical pages in her childhood. Sharon’s curiosity resulted in a passion to get these voices heard, especially by our children, who have benefited from a diversity of cultures in their lives and cannot imagine the adults they love as children. Sharon has worked as an educator at primary, secondary and polytechnic levels, and as an actor and host on stage and television for a decade. She considers it an honour to be able to write about something so close to her heart.
Jill Birch
Jill is the author of Turn the Page with Squeaky Sqworm and a mother of two and works as a part-time journalist. She's from Manchester, UK, and moved to Singapore to seek fame and fortune in 1998. Instead, she found an Irish husband! Now, she spends her days trying to keep up with her energetic offspring, Florrie and Frank, and hankers after a good cuppa and a chance to put her feet up. A mother's work is never done!
Mengjie Zou
Mengjie Zou is the author of Wings of My Expressions. She is currently attending Grade 11 at the Mt Douglas Secondary School in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
She began to write as early as 10 years old. She has been doing tutoring for her peers at school. Reading is one of her hobbies. She is ready to prepare another book to be published in future.
